Refurbishment of Specialist Children's Facility in Burton Upon Trent

Contract Duration:

20 Weeks

We completed the refurbishment of Hawthorn Resource Centre, Burton-on-Trent, for Staffordshire County Council. The centre is used by children with disabilities for short breaks and also provides respite care.

The appointment included converting a study into a specialist bathroom, which features an Arjo Huntleigh Malibu bath and hoist, and converting two ground floor en-suite bedrooms so that they were completely DDA compliant; these rooms also included the installation of specialist baths and hoists. In the bathrooms we installed brightly coloured designer tiles that continued the centre’s bright, fun and playful design theme appropriate for younger people. We also fitted electronic door closers to the bedroom doors, which were connected to the fire alarm system and new light fittings were installed throughout.

We also transformed a former cloakroom to create a new specialist interactive sensory room that featured bubble tubes, UV lights and a soft play area to enhance the children’s learning experience.

On the main entrance doors we installed a remote entry system incorporating an intercom, to prevent any unauthorised access to the site. The final element was to narrow the staircase so that the disabled children can climb the stairs holding both handrails.

Outside, we installed a new climbing frame, slides, rope ladders and a climbing wall, all set on a soft play surface.

Commenting on the project Andrew Northcliffe FCIOB, SPC manager, said: “From the outset to completion of the project Murray & Willis has acted in a positive and proactive manner, which has delivered a first class facility that everyone can be proud to be associated with and a fantastic new environment for the occupants of the building.”

“It’s been a pleasure working with Murray & Willis; they are client-oriented, quick to respond to issues, professional and achieve a quality end product.”
