We were appointed by the owners of the Grade II listed St George’s Hotel in Llandudno to completely refurbish the basement to create The Menai Suite – a unique new function and banqueting facility.

The historic Victorian 4-star hotel first opened in 1854 and over the years has played host to a number of high profile politicians, including Disraeli, Gladstone, Lloyd George and Churchill.

Our design and build appointment involved the excavation and subsequent fit-out of the basement of the hotel to create the sumptuous new suite. The basement, which had been used as a health and beauty studio was below sea level and had been derelict for three years. We had to engage and liaise with planning, CADW (Welsh Government Historic Environment), Mostyn Estate and The Victorian Society.

The project involved a complete new mechanical and electrical installation, including air conditioning. One of the major challenges was to install new structural steelwork that would create a 7-metre opening through the main structural hotel wall. The steelwork required to support the new opening which was in a one metre thick wall, weighed around 10 tonnes. This involved extensive underpinning in addition to the structural works.

Additional challenges arose given the age of the building and that it was listed. We also had to re-route major pipe work, which served the entire hotel.

To the rear of the new suite is a fully operational commercial kitchen; the public area has featured coffered ceilings, specialist lighting, new wall finishes, carpets, furniture and soft furnishings. A new disabled lift to gain access to the banqueting suite was installed to our specification.

To the exterior there is a private sunken terrace, which provides an exclusive entrance to the new suite and can be used for ‘al fresco’ dining and outdoor functions during the warmer months. We also installed a new curved entrance staircase featuring a curved concrete balustrade to create a unique outside space.
