University College Birmingham, The Maltings
Case Study
the
project
The project consisted of the refurbishment of 24 student accommodation kitchenettes in 3 separate blocks across the UCB campus.
The first phase of the project involved stripping out existing kitchens and removal of old floor coverings.
Once the strip out was complete and walls re-plastered where required, the new kitchens were installed with bright green coloured splashbacks, new white goods and cooker hoods.
We needed to carry out adaptations to reconfigure extraction for cooker hoods and associated ductwork. There was also minor electrical works required to suit the new kitchen equipment and configuration.
We then installed new floor finishes and completed decorations throughout utilising our own in-house decorators. Although the work was carried out in the summer shutdown, we still had to manage access and egress for deliveries and personnel as we were not allowed to use the campus main entrance. Therefore, we employed our own keyholder who was responsible for managing the process and liaising with the university.
Because the work was carried out over a short 12-week programme, phasing had to overlap between the three blocks, working on two blocks at any one time so organising logistics in regard to deliveries, allocation and organisation of labour was critical.
