The brief for the project was to create a new ground floor reception area and conversion of the existing laboratories into offices within the Robert Aitken Institute for Cancer Research.

This consisted of the removal of asbestos by a specialist sub-contractor, the complete strip out of the existing laboratories, furniture, fittings and a ceiling mounted heating system.

We transformed the exiting laboratories into new office space installing new high quality American white oak doors and screens throughout including external windows.

Within this 4000 square feet area we installed a new wet radiator heating system connected to the existing steam mains heating system along with new mechanical ventilation. The electrical works included new lighting throughout, new power and data to all areas, emergency lighting and a ‘Scanlight’ fire alarm system. We formed a new kitchen area including a DDA compliant section within a newly formed staff room, including refurbishment of the existing ladies and gents toilets, a new DDA toilet and ambulant toilet.

New ceilings, hard and soft floorings were installed throughout and decorations were carried out by our own in-house decorators.

The ground floor reception area was formed by enclosing the existing cantilevered structure with a high quality curtain walling system. To enable this to happen we altered and adapted the existing underground drainage system. The area was then finished to a high quality with decorative finishes and a bespoke oak veneered reception desk. In addition within this element of the project we formed a secure access lobby to the reception area.

The overall project was completed on time and within budget, funded by Advantage West Midlands.
